I realized a couple weeks ago that I own the domain dearhillary.org. I forget exactly why I bought it; probably at the behest of an earnest friend, but no matter now. When I saw this timely domain, I knew I had to do something with it. First, I built a simple petition application. Then, I realized that online petitions are lame artifacts from Internet version 2004, and took it down. After discussing a few concepts with my coworkers and friends, I settled on a Madlib. Pick a dozen or so words, and you have an instant letter to Senator Clinton along with a link to email it to her campaign. If anyone has a better idea of what to do with the domain, please, by all means share.

Save the Los Angeles Public Library

This is a grassroots community site initially launched to protest a proposed $1-per-book inter-branch loan fee, a plan which was tabled in direct response to 875 eloquent emails. Yay! But the L.A. library is still in dire straights, with devastating cuts threatened to its budget, which was already among the lowest in the US. If these cuts go through, they will result in closed branches, curbed book purchases and database and periodical subscriptions and unemployed librarians. Please send an email in support of a well-funded library, wherever you happen to live. These messages are being read by the Budget and Finance Committee as they consider what services Angelenos will have to learn to live without. The bookworms, librarians and families of Los Angeles thank you!

Update: this nascent field is expanding, and I've recently teamed up with Dan Kirby and Martyn Ware (Human League, Heaven 17, Future of Sound and Illustrious) to grow Sonic ID, a sonic-identity firm on both sides of the Atlantic. We just launched our new site. (And yes, it's brochure-ware...with guitar. Or in this case keyboard.) It's a work in progress, but by all means feedback welcome.

We have a toddler, I work two jobs, and my husband works full time as well. Since I was having trouble finding blogs that reflected my own experience I started to write about it. Twitter Theater - Fight Club

Fight Club deconstructed into status updates by its main characters, looped continuously on Twitter. Follow all the characters to catch the full dialog or tune into your favorites for choicer bits. The updates fire once per minute, so the actual film takes about 26 hours to run it's course. The Fight Club Meta-User on twitter follows all the characters, and is probably a good starting point.

The Invention of the Letter

-- a rare hand-drawn book by Beat poet and Zen teacher Philip Whalen. Though lesser-known than his peers Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, Whalen was a wonderful and subtle poet who was also one of the first Americans to study Zen in Japan. (He appears in Kerouac novels like The Dharma Bums under pseudonyms like Warren Coughlin and Ben Fagin, "a quiet, bespectacled booboo, smiling over books.") He met Gary Snyder and Lew Welch at Reed College, where he studied calligraphy with the illustrious Lloyd Reynolds. While in Kyoto in 1966, Whalen sketched out a charming fable about the invention of language in the Garden of Eden that was eventually published by pioneering communard Irving Rosenthal and given away for free at a 1968 reading in San Francisco. The Invention of the Letter has since become extremely scarce and is now available online for curious scholars and Beat fellow travelers.
