Metafilter Podcast Transcripts
There's an ongoing effort to transcribe episodes of the Metafilter Podcast. Using Fanscribed, we now have a good platform for letting people drop in and transcribe 30 seconds at a time, without special software. We've been using Fanscribed for a few months now; we've taken care of a dozen older episodes already.

Transcriptions make the audio content of the podcast available to the hearing impaired, and they're also helpful for people who would prefer to read than listen to the podcasts. We used to work on just the most recent podcast episode, and coordination was simpler - we could just discuss it in the episode thread. Now, the conversations about which older episodes are being worked on are getting scattered across Metatalk, hard to keep track of. A centralized thread here could be much easier to follow.
Role: coordinator, server admin, transcriber

We're currently working on episode 62.

Thank you, Pronoiac!
You know this was a struggle for me.
I was often wanting to transcribe yet not knowing where to go!

EVERYONE: Thanks for adopting fanscribed. I knew it was a perfect fit for metafiler.

And episode #62 is 100% complete!

Yay!

The next one is episode 61.

Yay!

(I should do some more)

There's a new episode out! The episode 74 transcript has started.
posted by Pronoiac at 3:41 PM on November 7, 2012

Hah! The transcripts made it into episode 74 of the podcast, and for evidence, see the transcript. Which just got finished! Cool.

So, episode 61 from April 2011 is still open. After that, there's the comic podcast, and I'll open up another one at the same time, because transcribing that will be really just amazingly goofy and meta and while I love that dearly it's totally understandable if you don't.
posted by Pronoiac at 2:45 PM on November 9, 2012

I should probably transcribe some of that comics podcast just as penance.
posted by cortex at 3:14 PM on November 9, 2012

Episode 61 is complete! I think beryllium finished it off.

We've made it back to March 2011, which is kind of amazing to me. The next couple are a break from the routine:

The next one back is the Metafilter Comics Digest Podcast, done for April Fools Day. It has the Mefi staff reading and interpreting comic strips. If you haven't transcribed before, this is a good start: there aren't multiple, overlapping speakers. If this isn't to your taste, there's also:

Episode 60, which is weightier - it starts with some calls from mefites from Japan, following the earthquake. This is pretty heavy.

You don't have to add the speaker to the sidebar at the right; for a test, I used:
bugbread; Hey Metafilter.
And that worked okay. I think I picked that up from beryllium. The Fanscribed-to-wiki filter doesn't account for this yet, but I'll work on it.
posted by Pronoiac at 12:45 PM on November 10, 2012

The comic podcast and episode 60 transcripts are completed and on the wiki. I think I sorted out the formatting, and I went back over older episodes.

I opened up episode 59, from February 2011. It has a project of mine in it, the Mefi song-a-day podcast, which is still rolling along, somewhat surprisingly.

Whats the next transcribe project? Everything linked is done :)
posted by TangerineGurl at 11:53 AM on November 28, 2012

Woot! Yup, beryllium finished off episode 59 - well, actually did almost all of it. Now, episode 58 is open.
posted by Pronoiac at 6:05 PM on November 28, 2012 [1 favorite]

Episode 58 is now transcribed as well!

By the way, Pronoiac, I've been enjoying your music podcast--it's a nice way to discover even more great stuff from Music!

Also, to give credit where credit is due, I think I picked up the (ex.) mathowie and jessamyn; thing from ceribus peribus and adrianhon! It's been neat to see how everyone's transcription styles influence one another and change over time. I suppose we could formally develop some more standardization at some point, though (but where's the fun in that?).

Also also, I love it when I see other people working on the podcast, even if it's just a few segments! So please do. :)
posted by beryllium at 8:02 AM on December 5, 2012

Yup, beryllium did all of episode 58 except my testing bits at the beginning. Thanks, beryllium!

I opened episode 57.

Which starts with a discussion of the theme music that's, uh, still relevant and amusing and worth teasing cortex about.
posted by Pronoiac at 1:49 PM on December 5, 2012

I just posted a couple of transcripts onto the wiki, and set up more Fanscribed pages.

And an "aw shucks" to beryllium about my podcast. Thanks for listening! I know people listen, but mostly I'm aware because I occasionally glance at my server logs. :)
posted by Pronoiac at 3:26 PM on December 5, 2012

And we're now working on this month's new episode, Episode 75, as well. Thanks for getting the page up so quickly, Pronoiac!

Episode 76 was just posted - the transcript is open!

Just finished off the Episode 57 transcription!

I would like to note that

a) I am very much liking the concept of Letterpress Waffles.
b) I described mathowie as (making faint beatboxy noises) and cortex as speaking (in the manner of a kitten meowing), which I hope was not too florid?
c) I really appreciate twist my arm doing the segment I kept getting stuck on (and then a few!)--we have averted Zeno's Transcript!
d) This was a good song with which to end the transcript that took two months. :)

Also, what with the transcriptions for Episodes 75, 76, and 77 being done, we've now transcribed over twenty consecutive episodes!

This is so great! I'm going to see if we can find a way to link the transcripts to the podcast pages so that people can find them.
posted by jessamyn at 1:51 PM on February 6, 2013 [1 favorite]

I personally like the florid descriptions. They seem apt and entertaining. Whenever I just put "(laughs)" I feel like I'm relatively slacking off.

(Also holy crap! 20 in a row.)
posted by Pronoiac at 2:07 PM on February 6, 2013

Make that 21 in a row! Episode 56 was one of the incomplete ones that we finished off last September.

I posted episode 57 to the wiki, and fixed the formatting for a couple of others. Episode 55 is open now.

As I set up the next transcript, I did a double-take; it seemed amazing and only a little implausible that beryllium had stealthily knocked off #56 when I wasn't looking.
posted by Pronoiac at 4:37 PM on February 6, 2013

Happy to report that #55 was completed and we are MOVING ONTO "The Ballad of Hardcore Taters" over here! Jump in!

Episode 80: Your Go-to Salad just came out. The transcript is open.
posted by Pronoiac at 3:56 PM on April 30, 2013

Finished off #53!

Excitingly, it looks like we collectively have now for the first time transcribed over half the podcast archive by length! As of now, the length of all extant episodes, including the Comics Podcast episode but not the Music Podcast episodes*, is 87:25:28; the length of all transcribed episodes is 44:38:04; and the length of all not yet transcribed episodes is 42:47:24.

* some of which do include interviews, so we might transcribe those too? Even so, the interviews are a small enough portion of those podcasts that I think we are definitely over halfway in either case!
posted by beryllium at 3:55 PM on June 1, 2013

And it looks like Episode 52: "Llama xrays" (2010-06-18) is ready as well, so we can move right on over there!
posted by beryllium at 6:46 PM on June 1, 2013

Woot for finishing off #53! That transcript is on the wiki now.

And today episode 81, "Does the Dog Die?," came out today! The transcript is open.
posted by Pronoiac at 2:18 PM on June 4, 2013

Episode #52 is zipped! Somewhere, there is an alternate universe where Metafilter's first post was llama-xray.com instead of Cat-Scan.com. Also I'll have to restrain myself from talking about Twelfth Night because me talking about Shakespeare is more or less like cortex talking about QWOP, but I was amused by that section also. :)

Onward to Episode 51: "Human Centipede" (2010-05-05)!
posted by beryllium at 6:47 PM on August 2, 2013

Okay, I posted #52 to the wiki! Along with #82 and #83, which I realize I hadn't mentioned here. Whoops!

Thank you for figuring out some of the mysteries, Pronoiac! Which I just saw you did for 86 and 49b as well as 49a. It is good knowing what the rest of those sentences were! You continue to make life better in small ways. :)

The Fanscribed software has gotten some updates, including the ability to watch podcast feeds and automatically start new transcripts. You can try out the new transcription interface - you'll have to sign up with an email address and password. I'm open to the new way or the old way. Thoughts?
posted by Pronoiac at 12:09 AM on June 4, 2014

Okay, I've taken it for a spin! I feel like I may be the wrong person to comment here, because maybe people new to transcribing would find the shorter segments and lack of initial speaker identification in the new interface helpful, but it feels like it creates more work for people who are already comfortable distinguishing mathowie from cortex, since it appears to require multiple passes to stitch and identify speakers.

I'm interested to hear other people's thoughts, though! And if I'm missing a more efficient transcription option in the new interface, please let me know.
posted by beryllium at 3:12 PM on June 4, 2014

I'm not keen on the newer interface either, but I wasn't sure if it was just me. So, Episode 93's transcript is open, with the old interface.
