phot.us
A quiet lens for photos: a good way to share a link to just one photo. And if you use Flickr, it's easy to do: just tag some of your photos with phot.us and go to phot.us/yourusername.

I've had the idea for a long time to make a photo gallery service that would focus more on individual people and less on community and meta-information, but kept building things that were just too big. And then this weekend, I had the idea that I would just build the lens, make it just one good thing, and do it. So, I registered the domain today, coded it in a night, and just rolled it out.

There are, of course, future plans: to support shortish urls for things (especially photos), multiple styles, more photo metadata, contact forms. But I'd like to get the core out first and then figure out what's most useful and essential: let me know what you think, it'd be much appreciated.

Hmmm I couldn't get it to work unfortunately.

I'll make it so that if you don't tag your photos with phot.us it'll still show recent ones. Anything else go wrong? It needs just your username after the /, which is unfortunately blurred in flickr between the name and the url you go to on flickr. (my username is macwright, but url is tmcw)

Well I did tag one photo, but I tried out both my screen name and user name and a few other variations for fun with the same result that I don't exist apparently.

I can see yours fine though at the link.

Hmmm. If I try with one photo say at http://phot.us/gomi/4182996829/ it shows the photo - but then I get the following underneath saying the photo belongs to "None".

Cauliflower by None | on flickr | back

The "on flickr" links goes to another user whose username is gomi while my url is gomi. But my account name is mjd-s (which doesn't work).

Odd! I can't seem to grab any of your photos via the API, or possibly the API itself is being wonky this morning. Anyway, I'll get back to ya after my day job :)

Oh! I think I've got it! The dash in your username (mjd-s) is not getting picked up by the expression I use to get usernames? I'll check it out in a bit.

And thanks for trying it out; it helps a ton to find the little kinks and blindspots I miss in quick development cycles.

No worries - I try to be as difficult as possible.

Yep - it's all stiched up! Also does short URLs (which, apparently, flic.kr does too :).

Nicely done. I wanted to do something similar to make my own portfolio site but with everything hosted and managed over on Flickr. A couple ideas: pulling larger images, like I Hardly Know Her; using machine tags (which are hidden) rather than pho.us to pick images to include on pho.us.

@chunking express: that's definitely on the backlog (larger pictures) I'd picture (lolz!) it as going to

l.phot.us and getting a nice layout for large pictures, or going to b.phot.us and getting a black-background design, etc. Maybe combine these? (featurecreep)

Wow, I Hardly Know Her is very similar. It's eerie building something not knowing what other people are doing in the same area, and then finding tons of sites that do the same kind of stuff.
