UCSB Social Computing Group's innovation competition for students anywhere
"Social Computing in 2020" is a competition open to current undergraduate and graduate students from any discipline or country. It's meant to encourage interesting thought about people and networked technology; the winners will receive chunks of money and maybe a little fame too. I've been helping behind the scenes on this with some friendly grad students and a great professor, just because I like this kind of thing. I think Metafilter students (or your friends who are students) might have some good ideas.
