Sonic Retro is exactly what it sounds like—a website dedicated to all things involved with the pre-1997 parts of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. In addition to an extensive information wiki, members have been producing hacks of the original games for years. The latest project by the site, Sonic 2 HD, features a high-definition re-imagining of the game's music and art with accurate engine physics, as seen by the recently released tech demo.
