DNC 2004 - Blogging the DNC in Boston
In 2004 I was one of a handful of "credentialled bloggers" who got press passes and special seating at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. I took a bunch of low res photos and kludged them together with some narrative text in a php scriptish set of pages and forgot about it. Now, thanks to Flickr I can put them all in order and tag and title them. The original photo essay is here. The blog posts I wrote are here. Special treat for MetaFilter readers here.

Dopey question, but did they do a similar thing this year, or is the concept old hat by now?

They did, I think. I was totally removed from it this year so I'm not sure what the scene was like this time around. I got to meet Obama in 2004, that was sort of neat.

Digg sponsored a huge tent with wifi this year, so it was like bloggers everywhere, instead of here's this tiny group of bloggers allowed here.

Also, where's the Ed Helms photo?

Ah, thanks guys. I figured they would have some bloggers, but I wasn't sure if the lack of hullaballoo this time around was because the novelty had worn off and blog coverage was considered just as legit as any other media, or what.

PS. Ed Helms is the last link.

To be pedantic, the Big Tent was not actually at either of the venues, of course. The DNC still credentialed a limited number of blogs for Pepsi Center/Mile High access, many of which were part of the so-called "State Blogger Corps". I aggregated the latter at Electicker during the week (that feed is abandoned and will no longer be updated).

I believe they were generally given Hall access (upper levels) for the Pepsi Center, and could use temporary Floor passes for 30 minutes at a time.

Quality of the State Corps blogs, as may be expected, varied wildly: some folks posted little more than linkdumps or lazy pieces on how they weren't even attending (!) (I guess these were multi-author blogs where someone else did go to Denver though), but some had really interesting updates with unique access to their own delegations. I remember the NH one ("this blog is older than Sarah Palin's experience in high office") being especially great during the DNC.

Oh, and nice to see these again, jess. I was in the US for the first time during this time (in Boston just after the DNC and in NYC during the RNC) - timing completely by accident - and I remember my interest being piqued just by the commotion around it, it really made me wonder what exactly goes on at these events.

I remember your pictures being part of that discovery process. And four years later I'm obsessed enough to build websites on the election and aggregate content on the conventions and staying up all night to watch them, so I guess I owe you thanks. :) XO
