Showdown on Hurley Street
This is a story I wrote for the Philadelphia Weekly that documents the total implosion of a city block over a two week period. I sketched out some impressions of the same block earlier on my "Today I Saw" project that documented my time spent in the field as a social worker. These took place prior to the collapse: 1, 2, 3, 4. In all, I think this provides a pretty good idea of what's going on in the most isolated and impoverished parts of the city, from a perspective that's otherwise hard to come by. It's not pretty.
